The aims of this competition entry was to design a hotel that would re-align visitor’s perception of the dramatic canyon by depriving them of literal visual links; instead introducing them to a cultivated subterranean shelter that heightens their senses. Intimating them with colour, morphology, touch and star laden skies whilst ultimately providing space to dwell.
This system of open air caves abstracts the understanding of the Grand Canyon through contrast, form, materiality, mystery, perspective and a sense of the pioneer. The subterranean shelter therefore offers a contrasting yet integral experience, which allows inhabitants to experience the canyon above with fresh eyes and hands.
